In the book, ââ¬Å"Plantation Mistressâ⬠(Clinton, 1984) by writer Catherine Clinton, it appears that Clinton wants to communicate her dissatisfaction for the way in which ladies were dealt with so harshly.â She discusses house keepers brought to our nation during the year 1620 and in Clintonââ¬â¢s composing, it is amazingly intriguing how she accumulated her data for this book from letters that were composed such a significant number of years back, and even from journals, proposing that ladies from that antiquated timeframe werenââ¬â¢t rewarded as equivalents in the profound South and in this slave time and time in our history, the writer transfers to her perusers that there is proof that mercilessness took place toward ladies and practices, for example, utilizing females as workhorses shouldnââ¬â¢t have been adequate in whenever period. Additionally, a large number of these ladies alluded to as fancy women werenââ¬â¢t dealt with appropriately and didnââ¬â¢t e ven get the important and fundamental things, for example, legitimate toiletries or food. Compare and contrast the poems by Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke
The size of World War one was huge bringing about 8556315 passings over the entire world. It was the biggest war ever. The conditions in the channels was terrible, as all men had lice, were defenseless against visit gas assaults and could undoubtedly come down with illnesses, for example, channel foot and gangrene. Rodents invaded the channels, the men where canvassed in mud and they didn't have the opportunity to routinely wash. The men smoked to unwind around evening time. It's not astounding that the future of an officer in the channels was Wilfred Owen was conceived on the eighteenth March 1893 in Owestry, Shropshire. He was instructed at the Birkenhead establishment and at Shrewsbury Technical School. Owens occupations comprise of a lay partner to the vicar of Dunsden and an understudy instructor. Before the flare-up of World War one he functioned as a private guide instructing English. In October 1915 he enrolled in the craftsmen rifles where he prepared for seven months. In January 1917 he was dispatched as a second lieutenant with the Manchester regiment. Owen started the war as a hopeful and bright man, yet before long changed after numerous awful encounters. Owen was determined to have shellshock, it was while recuperating in Craiglockhart clinic, Owen met Siegfried Sassoon. During a period in Scotland Owen composed huge numbers of his sonnets. Owen passed on November fourth 1918 at the age of twenty-five. Conversely Rupert Brooke, another popular War writer. He was most popular for his optimistic, energetic verse during World War one, anyway Brooke never experienced direct battle. Brooke was conceived in Rugby on the third August 1887. Brooke was instructed at Rugby School, Kings College and college of Cambridge. In 1913 Brooke endured a passionate breakdown, accepted to be a result of desire and sexual disarray. Brooke was dispatched in the regal naval force volunteer division as a sub lieutenant. Brooke created sepsis from a mosquito chomp, while going with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary power. He kicked the bucket on April 23rd 1915 off the island of Lemnos. ââ¬Å"Dulce et Decorum Estâ⬠is a sonnet by Wilfred Owen, which is supposed to be his generally well known. The sonnet clarifies numerous thoughts of war. The sonnet is about a little gathering of troopers limping once again from the bleeding edge. They're in a terrible condition from the battling they have suffered and are needing some relief. As they return they are assaulted by a gas assault. The warriors battle in the bedlam yet effectively put on the gas marks. Anyway in the battle on man falls flat and is abandoned. The sonnet tells how Owen gets spooky by the picture of the agonizing demise of the man. The idea never left his psyche. The sonnet gives the peruser a full knowledge into the repulsiveness of the war. Another of Wilfred Owens sonnets is ââ¬Å"Disabled.â⬠It shows the neglection of fighters who have returned from war. The sonnet recounts to an account of a youngster who was attractive and cherished the magnificence on a football pitch. He chose to pursue the war. His reasons? He got told he would glance a God in uniform, to dazzle his better half and he adored magnificence. Be that as it may, in the war he lost his appendages. On his arrival to the nation he didn't get his saint welcome, yet rather he was disregarded. Indeed, even the medical caretakers taking care of him maintained a strategic distance from him. Then again ââ¬Å"The soldier,â⬠one of Rupert Brooke's most well known sonnets, attempts to delineate the brilliance of the war. Rather than Owens progressively practical perspectives on war, Brooke's is undeniably increasingly, respectable and celebrated. His disposition was to console the British and conceal them structure the genuine truth. The sonnet ââ¬Å"Dulce et Decorum est,â⬠utilizes comparisons, for example, ââ¬Å"bent twofold like poor people under sacksâ⬠this brings the picture of the officers looking like hobos and nearly being injured under the heaviness of their packs. Owen utilizes similar sounding word usage all through the sonnet, ââ¬Å"knock â⬠kneed.â⬠The utilization of similar sounding word usage depicts successfully and rapidly the states of the warriors, letting the peruser make the picture in their psyche. The line ââ¬Å"haunting flares,â⬠is one of numerous incredible depictions Owen employments. It depicts the image of shells detonating behind the men however having a practically spooky impact on them. Into the sonnet Owen utilizes viable accentuation, for example, ââ¬Å"Gas! Gas! Fast boys!â⬠This line rapidly builds the rhythm of the sonnet and the reality. The utilization of one syllable words with an outcry mark likewise makes you experience the adrenaline surge the officers would of experienced. AS the beat of the sonnet is expanded so too is the earnestness, this can been seen with words utilized, for example, ââ¬Å"floundering,â⬠ââ¬Å"drowning,â⬠ââ¬Å"fumbling,â⬠and ââ¬Å"stumbling.â⬠Because the words are finishing off with ââ¬Å"ingâ⬠it adds to the desire to move quickly and accelerates the sonnet. Owen likes to include the peruser into his sonnets, he does this by the utilization of word ââ¬Å"you.â⬠As Owens sees are against nationalism and the brilliance of fight he includes the peruser to show exactly how awful and awful the war was, and to encounter the agony and passing encompassing you like a shell. ââ¬Å"Disabledâ⬠by Wilfred Owen additionally includes the peruser and appends the peruser sincerely to the officer. The main verse starts with, ââ¬Å"he sat in a wheel seat sitting tight for dull, and shuddered in his horrible suit o f grey.â⬠This citation shows an officer who is incapacitated yet in addition by the expression, ââ¬Å"waiting for darkâ⬠shows the dejection of the man and can be viewed as he is being compelled to remain in his desolate state. The sonnet varies among present and past and it is plainly found in the sonnet the man's current life is dull and discouraging, this can be seen with the line ââ¬Å"voices of young men rang disheartening like a psalm, voices of play and joy after day.â⬠The voices help him to remember his lost youth and how the world carries on absent to his condition. In the subsequent refrain, Owen goes into the man's past and communicates the vivacity of his previous lifestyle. The line ââ¬Å"now he will never feel again how thin young ladies' abdomens are,â⬠demonstrates he has lost the capacity to be an ordinary man and is tormented by young ladies' love. This can be seen more clear in the line â⬠contact him like some eccentric disease,â⬠this shows the sentiment of dismissal and torment and how they are presently repelled by him. In the principal verse it is expressed he has lost his legs, ââ¬Å"Leglessâ⬠yet the expression ââ¬Å"before he discarded his knees, ââ¬Å"shows he is considered answerable for the loss of his legs and nearly ridicules him for his lack of regard. Before he pursued the war he felt glad to support a physical issue while playing football, ââ¬Å"one time he preferred a blood-smear down his leg.â⬠He cherished the magnificence on a football pitch and commended like a legend for a little twisted. After one of the football coordinates the man become inebriated, ââ¬Å"drunk as a pegâ⬠and chose to pursue the war. The man's purposes behind pursuing the war were, ââ¬Å"someone said he'd look a God in kilts.â⬠The utilization of the word ââ¬Å"someoneâ⬠shows that the man was effectively convinced to join the military and by somebody of no significance to him. Likewise he joined to demonstrate his manliness to intrigue the women and his better half. Anyway his profession in the military was fleeting and he was ââ¬Å"drafted out.â⬠ââ¬Å"Some cheered him home,â⬠this line shows the man didn't get all the acclaim and wonder he pursued particularly in the wake of giving up his life, and incidentally the cheers was greater for him on a football pitch. This shows Owens solid musings against wonder and energy that a man who yielded his life isn't demonstrated the applause he merits and the absence of care for the man after the war. The sonnet closes with an inquiry to the perusers, ââ¬Å"why don't they come?â⬠This inquiry shows the man is frantic for care and need of consideration, and is yelling out for the assistance of the medical caretakers, anyway it could be viewed as the man is sitting tight for something perhaps his passing to end his misery. Rupert Brooke's ââ¬Å"The Soldierâ⬠has a totally extraordinary view to Wilfred Owens sonnets. Albeit the two artists manage the issue of war, Brooke's sonnets are not quite the same as Owens since Brooke trusts it is daring, fitting and gutsy to kick the bucket for your nation. The sonnet begins with a pompous articulation ââ¬Å"If I should kick the bucket just consider this me.â⬠This announcement is by all accounts coordinated to somebody near him. It is likewise written in the contingent tense as though he accepts he won't bite the dust. In the following line Brooke's utilization of similar sounding word usage is appeared with ââ¬Å"foreign fields.â⬠This accentuates the word remote, focusing on Brookes sentiment of energy regardless of whether you were to kick the bucket in an outside nation. In the third line Brooke the word England is presented just because which is to some degree weird as a result of the enthusiasm perspectives on Brooke. The word England is then rehashed a few times in the sonnet, fortifying Brooke's exceptional love of his country. In the sonnet Brooke utilizes enjambment which gives the sonnet its deliberate, quiet feel. Redundancy is additionally used to impact the sentiment of pride and greatness. In the line ââ¬Å"her blossoms do love,â⬠Brooke alludes to nature as a quieting difference to the war that is occurring. Brooke utilizes exemplification when he alludes to England as an individual, ââ¬Å"her sights her sounds dream cheerful as her day.â⬠Brooke utilizes this embodiment as a method of saying battling for your nation resembles reimbursing all the things England has accomplished for you. The structure of ââ¬Å"Dulce et Decorum est,â⬠is very intreseting as all through the sonnet the speed and power of the sonnet is perpetually evolving. ââ¬Å"Gas! Gas! Brisk, boys!â⬠This utilization of monosyllabic words stimulates up the sonnet and the use of the shout marks higher the force. The sonnet opens with ââ¬Å"Bent twofold, similar to old homeless people under sacks, Thump kneed, hacking like witches, we reviled through slime, Til

Moral Dilemma an Example of the Topic Psychology Essays by
Moral Dilemma The Story of Yingying features two characters that have a different moral outlook towards their relationship with each other. They live in the ancient Chinese world in which there are many complex issues which affect them differently. This has an impact on their relations pulling them apart. Zhang is a scholar who is not very rich but he is capable and thus holds much promise to excel in his studies. Yingying, on the other hand is from an upper-class background whose future has already been decided by her parents by selecting an aristocratic partner whom she will marry. This difference in the background between the two was not seen when they first met which complicated their relationship later. The text of the story however is very revealing and clearly gives out the true characters of the lovers and the intensity of their love for each other. The different social background of the lovers indicates that their romance is not likely to end favorably. At the same time the difference in feelings felt by them for each other and their moral dilemmas come out clearly in the narrative. Zhang shows that he is an immature person who has falsely won Yingyings love and broken her heart for his own greed. Yingying, on the other hand, shows that her love for Zhang is true and steady. Thus, Zhang fails to prove his sincerity, while Yingying comes out as more honest and candid in their relationship. Need essay sample on "Moral Dilemma" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed The character of Zhang, the scholar is difficult to comprehend from the very beginning. Many things about him make it necessary for the reader to question his actions as soon as the story starts. He is introduced as a person who is clear about his goalsa scholar who is working very hard to pass the imperial examinations. The reader is thus quite impressed by Zhangs dedication to his studies and thus starts respecting him. However, when he very rashly falls in love with Yingying without a second thought on first seeing her, the reader starts suspecting his intentions for a man dedicated to his studies cannot give up his goals so quickly. A person like Zhang who falls in love with a girl as Yingying after seeing her face and body without studying her character does create doubts of his overall intentions and the strength of his character which come true at the end of the tale. The reader explores two possibilities for Zhangs sudden love for Yingying. Students Usually Tell EssayLab writers: Who wants to do my essay for me online? Specialists suggest: There Is Nothing Impossible For Essaylab Paper Writer The first possibility is that perhaps he is not fully aware of the outside world as the reader once believed. It is, of course, necessary to see the situation in which he has taken his decision. At the time in which Zhang lived in China, male youth were traditionally not allowed to see or meet beautiful women of the court. Possibly he would have had no opportunity, due to his social standing to meet beautiful and cultured women of high birth as Yingying. He may have been exposed only to the lower class women as servants or as a student deeply occupied in his studies he would have had no time to see women. The above possibilities indicate that Zhang was innocent and had fallen in love with Yingying immediately after seeing her due to her beauty and good grooming and not with any ill intention. Zhang can thus be seen as a very noble person with good intent. However, the second possibility is more alarming. In this Zhang can be seen as a man who is very much exposed to the World and after seeing a beautiful woman falls for her to enjoy the physical pleasure of her company. His reaction to her beauty is thus far from innocent and is only concerned with deriving as much pleasure as is possible from her beauty. After seeing his conduct when he is leaving for his examination, in a later part of the story, the reader may feel that such behavior is expected from men during that period in Chinese society. Yingying possibly aware that Zhang is about to leave her forever, says to him, To seduce someone and then abandon her is perfectly natural, and it would be presumptuous of me to resent it. It would be an act of charity on your part if, having first seduced me, you were to go through with it and fulfill your oath of lifelong devotion. These words provide a view to the reader that Zhang had never intended to be seriously involved with Yingying a nd was only flirting with her with false promises to leave her at an opportune time. Yet the question does arise as to why he would leave and not marry Yingying. This moral dilemma is faced by both the main characters throughout the story. Yingying is a prime ministers daughter. Thus all her activities and actions are exposed to the public. She has to ensure that she does not get involved with a weak match as otherwise it would spoil the family name. She also has some responsibility as a young lady from an aristocratic family to abide by high standards of behavior. Thus though she is initially impressed by Zhang and sees that he is taking a lot of interest in her, she does not take notice of him. The Confucian moral code that binds aristocrats is also binding on Yingying and she appears aware of her limitations in socially mixing with people of lower order as Zhang. The moral code can be a dilemma for Yingying only if she is intending to break the same. Her intent to break it is obvious when she gives an indication of this to Hungniang when she asks her response to Zhangs initial approach to her. She shows some interest in Zhang to her maid but tells her not to inform her mother. This indicates that she wants to keep her option open to pursue the relationship with Zhang. Thus the young lady is in a dilemma which continues as Zhang and Yingying exchange many letters through her maid Hungniang. Yingying is happy that she is getting Zhangs attention and he wants to meet her. But when the actual time comes to meet she goes back on her words and refuses to meet Zhang. This shows that there is a conflict between her duties as a lady of high birth and desire to meet Zhang. Zhang also experiences a similar moral dilemma between duty and desire. One voice tells him that women are a distraction to men pursuing studies or a profession, thus if he wants to succeed he may have to give up his desire to be close to Yingying. The very sight of her distracts the young man and he loses his focus on studies. While he is introduced and referred to as Scholar Zhang through out the text, his actions are directed more towards winning the love of Yingying than in pursuing his studies. This becomes quite obvious in the conversation between him and his friends following the receipt of Yingyings letter. Zhang says to his friend, It is a general rule that those women endowed by Heaven with great beauty invariably either destroy themselves or destroy someone else. He believes that Yingying will finally destroy him with her beauty if he continues to pursue her love as he has promised. Thus this creates a dilemma which is fully evident in the initial stages itself as he finds that his love for Yingying is clashing with his studies and professional growth. Though he perhaps would have liked to remain with Yingying and make her his wife, he cannot do so and complete his studies at the same time. There is thus a conflict between his body which wants Yingying and his mind which takes him towards his duty. However this dilemma faced by Zhang between love and studies should have occurred at two levels. Though he has been referred to as a gentleman by Hungniang he is not of a noble birth. Thus he will not be allowed to marry Yingying even if he intended to do so and thus have no moral right to touch her. This is obvious and Mrs. Tsui tells him very clearly that he does not belong to the same high society as them and thus cannot form a part of their family by marrying Yingying. Given this reality it is quite surprising that he pursues his relationship with Yingying so enthusiastically and does not hold back his advances frequently demonstrating that he is not just flirting but is truly in love with her. By falsely showing the force of his love initially, Zhang can be seen as a very dishonest person. Thus he mourns along with Yingying when she loses her father by recalling his own sorrow when he lost his parents and also makes up a plan of having vegetarian food to indicate his closeness to her. His action of false mourning can be interpreted as lack of respect for the dead. Thus he is not concerned about honoring the dead but only wants to fulfill his physical desire of being close to Yingying. There is apparently no struggle within him on this issue and he just seems to want to be near Yingying by any means. This thought in the reader is supported by the subsequent action narrated in the story. The difference between the characters also indicates their mental states when they are apart. Yingyings letter and Zhangs reaction to it also show the same emotions. Yingying shows that she continues to love Zhang and understands why he is staying in the capital to pursue his studies even at the cost of missing her company. Zhang however only attempts to justify his own position. Yingying writes: Our first meeting was at the banquet, as cousins. Then you persuaded my maid to inform me of your love; and I was unable to keep my childish heart firm. You made advances, like that other poet, Ssu-ma Hsiang-ju. I failed to repulse them as the girl did who threw her shuttle. When I offered myself in your bed, you treated me with the greatest kindness, and I supposed, in my innocence, that I could always depend on you. How could I have foreseen that our encounter could not possibly lead to something definite that having disgraced myself by coming to you, there was no further chance of serving you openly as a wife? The reader can very clearly see that Yingying is truly suffering as much as she is expressing it as shown by the writer. She is also shown to feel the consolation provided by Zhang. However as the story progresses, Zhangs true character is revealed to the reader when he curses Yingying for using her charm to bring disaster to him by distracting him from his studies and compares her to a monster capable of extreme cruelty. Zhang then crosses limits by comparing himself as one of those great men destroyed by low women as Yingying. The story of love between these two characters, Zhang and Yingying, thus comes out as a very complex relationship. Zhangs love is merely physical and demanding from Yingying, she indicates that the love experienced by her is caring and long lasting. Yingying has a more favorable picture of Zhang though the reader is aware of the inconsistency shown by him. Zhangs affection for her however comes out to be false and unbecoming of a gentleman. His love is weak just as he appears to be a person who does not display strong moral character. Zhangs love is selfish while Yingying is more virtuous. A woman of noble birth, she is even prepared to give up her aristocracy, while Zhang while abandoning their relationship continues to stay in the capital with the comfort of the thought that he has once possessed her love. War in the World essays
War in the World essays On Aug. 2, 1990, Iraqi military forces, on orders from President Saddam Hussein, invaded and occupied the small country of Kuwait. The Persian Gulf War of 1991from January 16 to February 28was fought to expel Iraq and restore Kuwaiti independence. The war introduced several technologically advanced weapon systems. As well, the United States forged a broad-based international coalition that confronted Iraq militarily strategy. The military coalition consisted of: unni-versus-Shia (for and Arab-versus-Persian religious and ethnic disputes, to a personal animosity between Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeini. Above all, Iraq launched the war in an effort to consolidate its rising power in the Arab world and to replace Iran as the dominant Persian Gulf state. Phebe Marr, a noted analyst of Iraqi affairs, stated that "the war was more immediately the result of poor political judgement and miscalculation on the part of Saddam Hussein," and "the decision to invade, taken at a moment of Iranian Iraq and Iran had engaged in border clashes for many years and had revived the dormant Shatt al Arab waterway dispute in 1979. Iraq claimed the 200-kilometer channel up to the Iranian shore as its territory, while Iran insisted that the thalwega line running down the middle of the waterwaynegotiated last in 1975, was the official border. The Iraqis, especially the Baath leadership, regarded the 1975 treaty as merely a truce, not a definitive settlement. The Iraqis also perceived revolutionary Iran's Islamic agenda as threatening to their pan-Arabism. Khomeini, bitter over his expulsion from Iraq in 1977 after fifteen years in An Najaf, vowed to avenge Shia victims of Baathist repression. Baghdad became more confident, however, as it watched the once invincible Imperial Iranian Army disintegrate, as most of its highest ranking officers were executed. ...

Borne By, Borne On, and Borne With
Borne By, Borne On, and Borne With Borne By, Borne On, and Borne With Borne By, Borne On, and Borne With By Maeve Maddox The English word bear has so many definitions and uses that it could provide fodder for several posts. This article is about the use of the past participle borne followed by a preposition. Here is the odd usage in my local newspaper that prompted this post: thereââ¬â¢s blame to be borne on everyone. I looked on the Web to see if anyone else was using ââ¬Å"borne onâ⬠in this way. I found these examples: [Lack of fresh food] leads to lower lifespans in these areas, higher healthcare costs borne on everyone and general malaise. And, we had people opting out of the system and waiting until they got sick to charge ER costs that were ultimately borne on everyone else.à If you have seen the documentary The Corporation, you will be familiar with the economics term externalities which are the external costs of any enterprise which are borne on everyone else but the enterprise itself. Today most people think that [the expense of] having children should be borne on everyone else. Blame and expense are borne by people, not on them. Here are examples of the correct use of borne followed by the prepositions with, on, and by: His wife has borne with his faults for fifty years. The returning war hero was borne on the shoulders of two burly police officers. The price increase was borne by consumers. Borne is more poetic than mere carried. Fitzgerald used the word in the closing line of The Great Gatsby: So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. Borne often has the connotation that whatever is being carriedââ¬âliterally or figurativelyââ¬â requires great effort: Over the casket the great flag that had draped it [was] held widespread in the hands of the eight petty officers who had borne the heavy weight to its place. She is a woman whoà has borne disappointmentà all her life. Borne is used as a suffix to create words that have the sense of being carried or distributed: Water-borne diseases are any illness caused by drinking water contaminated by human or animal faeces, which contain pathogenic microorganisms. High in the sky, water in clouds can act as a temptress to lureà airborne pollutantsà such as sulfur dioxide into reactive aqueous particulates. The speaker who said, ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s blame to be borne on everyoneâ⬠was mixing up two ideas. Blame is placed on someone, but, once placed, blame is borne by the person blamed. Effective leadership Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Effective leadership - Essay Example Discussion Lincolnââ¬â¢s Presidency is remembered for the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery, a goal for which he himself unfortunately had to pay the ultimate price of losing his life at the hands of John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate supporter. Yet Lincolnââ¬â¢s commonsense and well thought out approach to leadership makes us look at his life and principles again and again. He was a man who truly practiced what he preached. His undying and concerted efforts not only won the war for the Union but he also led from the front, marshalling and advising his forces and generals, while raising support and winning over the common man to the cause of freedom and equality for all, one of the principal features of our constitution and the American way of life, where each is free to do as he likes in the pursuit of happiness for the collective good of all. The author has very cleverly structured the book into four sections: People, Character, Endeavour and Communication. Abraha m Lincolnââ¬â¢s way of dealing with people was rather unique, and as the author puts it, he may have been one of the earliest leaders to advocate and follow the principle of Management by Wandering Around, as later defined by Peters and Waterman in their bestseller ââ¬ËIn Search of Excellenceââ¬â¢. Lincoln believed in getting out of his office and circulating among the troops (Phillips, 14). Of course, where he could not do it in person, his messages of encouragement and comfort were instrumental in raising the troopsââ¬â¢ morale and winning over many a man to his cause. During the four year Civil War, Lincoln spent a lot of time with the War Office, the Army and the Navy, inspecting troops and weaponry and noting their capabilities. He wanted the latest information at all times and is even known to be one of the only Presidents that came under enemy fire in a war situation. Lincoln walked across to his Secretary of State Edwin M. Stantonââ¬â¢s office every day to get the latest on the war situation. Besides having his weekly meetings at the set times and locations, Lincoln was often known to call extempore sessions of his cabinet and advisors as the need arose. Rather than lock himself away in an ivory tower, Lincoln loved to roam among the people. He would make himself accessible to most people almost 75% of the time, and believed that these ââ¬Ëpublic opinion bathsââ¬â¢ were necessary to gain the support of people as well as make himself a visible leader while garnering the thoughts and opinions of the populace. He favored as little security and protocol as possible, believing that a true and righteous leader had nothing to fear. Lincoln was also known to be an approachable leader with an efficacious, amicable style. He had an open door policy with all men reporting to him and wished to be visible and available to them. In the chapter Build Strong Alliances, the author wants to show us how the President used his wit, charm, communicatio n and oratory skills to win not only Court arguments while in his practice at Springfield but also to opponents and people on the sidelines regarding the slavery issue. Lincoln was full of wisecracks, anecdotes and stories that would help in winning men over to the cause of emancipation. Another of Lincolnââ¬â¢s erudite principles of leadership was Persuade Rather than Coerce (Phillips, 39). Lincoln

Martin Luther King Jr's use of ethos pathos and logos in his I have a Essay
Martin Luther King Jr's use of ethos pathos and logos in his I have a dream speach - Essay Example In terms of rhetorical theory, ethos represents the implementation of ethics and morals as a rhetorical tool. One of Kingââ¬â¢s most powerful implementation of logos appears when he states, ââ¬Å"One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discriminationâ⬠(ââ¬ËI Have a Dream Speechââ¬â¢). Here King is comparing the oppression of the modern African-American with the same oppression that was experienced during slavery. This is a powerful implementation of ethos as it implements societies understanding of the wrongness of slavery in demonstrating that similar events continue to occur. Logos is understood as the rhetorical implementation of logic and reason as primary argumentative techniques. Kingââ¬â¢s speech makes great use of logos. One of the most powerful implementations of this occurs when King references the Declaration of Independence. He states, ââ¬Å"It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concernedâ⬠(ââ¬ËI Have a Dream Speechââ¬â¢). Of course, King is referencing the nature of the Declaration of Independence as proclaiming the unalienable rights of all citizens.

Truth And Lies About The Computer Virus :: essays research papers
Truth and Lies About the Computer Virus Walk into any computer store today and there will be at least twenty or thirty computer virus programs. From the looks of it computer viruses have gotten out of hand and so has the business of stopping it. The computer user must cut through the media hype of apocoliptic viruses and shareware programs and discover the real facts. Before we even start the journey of exploring the computer virus we must first eliminate all the "fluff." The computer user needs to understand how information about viruses reaches the public. Someone creates the virus and then infects at least one computer. The virus crashes or ruins the infected computer. A anti-virus company obtains a copy of the virus and studies it. The anti-virus company makes an "unbiased" decision about the virus and then disclose their findings to the public. The problem with the current system is that there are no checks and balances. If the anti-virus company wants to make viruses seem worse all they have to do is distort the truth. There is no organization that certifies wheather or not a virus is real. Even more potentially harmful is that the anti-virus companies could write viruses in order to sell their programs. Software companies have and do distort the truth about viruses. "Antivirus firms tend to count even the most insignificant variations of viruses for advertising purposes. When the Marijuana virus first appeared, for example, it contained the word "legalise," but a miscreant later modified it to read "legalize." Any program which detects the original virus can detect the version with one letter changed -- but antivirus companies often count them as "two" viruses. These obscure differentiations quickly add up." http://www.kumite.com/myths/myth005.htm Incidentally the Marijuana virus is also called the "Stoned" virus there by making it yet another on the list of viruses that companies protect your computer against. I went to the McAfee Anti-virus Web site looking for information on the Marijuana virus but was unable to obtain that information. I was however able to get a copy of the top ten viruses of their site. On specific virus called Junkie: "Junkie is a multi-partite, memory resident, encrypting virus. Junkie specifically targets .COM files, the DOS boot sector on floppy diskettes and the Master Boot Record (MBR). When initial infection is in the form of a file infecting virus, Junkie infects the MBR or floppy boot sector, disables VSafe (an anti-virus terminate-and-stay-resident program (TSR), which is included with MS-DOS 6.X) and loads itself at Side 0, Cylinder 0, Sectors 4 and 5. The virus does not become memory resident, or infect files at this time.

Catherine and Heathcliffââ¬â¢s Passion in Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Essay
1.3 Themes in Wuthering Height ââ¬ËWuthering Heightsââ¬â¢ is a novel of Emily Bronte, known for the famous destructive love between Heathcliff and Catherine. Before I start, I would like to ask: Is love the major issue in the book? Or does the position in society outweigh the feeling of love? I found many other interesting themes which are discussed along the whole length of the novel, among which love, revenge, and social class are the main themes in the book and the racism, nature, the obsessive and the degradation are the minor themes, but not less important as the others. In the information below, I will present the detailed themes which strongly affected me and I will try to answer those questions during this chapter. I will start discussing love and passion in the book. It seems that Emily Bronte put the accent on the strong feelings between the characters and love is the most powerful one. Love appears in the form of several types and with different intensities in the novel. But there is a special type of love, the one between Heathcliff and Catherine, which is the most beautiful story in English Literature. Their love became an archetype because of their desire to become a single soul, to take care of each other, no matter what; the type of love in which the lovers feel as if they were the only persons on earth. I will start by referring to each type of love I found in the text. The love between Heathcliff and Catherine, as I said before, is a beautiful one, but it is also a destructive love. Everybody was against their love because they had a strange love; they were violent, doing unusual things which were not accepted by the others. Compared to this kind of love, the love between Catherine and Edgar was civilized and constructive. From my point of view, in their love, I found peace and comfort on all sides. Also, their love was accepted by the others. The love between Cathy and Linton is another type of love. Itââ¬â¢s like a father-daughter love. I consider that Linton wants Cathy to marry him because he wants to protect her, and love her as a ââ¬Ëmotherââ¬â¢. I think that Linton didnââ¬â¢t receive the love that he wanted from his parents and thatââ¬â¢s why he was doing that with Cathy. And the last but not least, the love between Cathy and Hareton is the most beautiful one. Their love is open-hearted and innocent and constitutes an equilibrium between all the loves above-mentioned. Their love contains the passion without destructiveness between Heathcliff and Catherine, the fineness and the tenderness without inequality between Edgar and Catherine. The social class is another important theme in the story. In the Victorian period, a great emphasis was placed on social classes and it was, somehow, a family heritage. For all that, people accepted their positions in the social hierarchy and they did not fight to have more than that, because of the different society at that time. Also, the people were judged by this aspect, and not by their personalities and the kindness of their souls. And this is a false thinking, because, from my point of view, the destiny and the character of Heathcliff would have been different, if the people had behaved gently with him. For example, the children born in a rich family in that time will be rich until the end and the same thing with the poor ones. This thing doesnââ¬â¢t change at all, I remain at the same level since my birth. But in the Emily Bronteââ¬â¢s novel, the characters tried to change their social class and a strong example for this is Heathcliff. I think that the author chose to put the characters in this lower class because she knew that they could change and the class position was a motivation and an impulse for them to change. Certainly, the social class is very well defined in the book, except for Heathcliff because when he returns rich, he surprises everyone, but his personality was the same; he has the countrymanââ¬â¢s personality. The saying ââ¬Ëyou canââ¬â¢t judge a book by its coverââ¬â¢ fits Heathcliff perfectly well. Also, the two regions where the action takes place are built concordantly with the lower and upper class. Thrushcross Grange is visibly superior to Wuthering Heights. The last one is a farmhouse, in which live normal people, belong to the lower class. Heathcliff, a poor orphan boy belongs to Wuthering Heights, together with the servants to the lower class and Catherine and Isabella belong to the upper class. So I think that is a connection between the social class, revenge and the richness. I consider that Heathcliff returns rich because he has a purpose: he intensifies the love of the two women with this change because he knows that the betrayal of their social class means the betrayal of their family. From my point of view, this next theme has a connection with the previous one. This paragraph is about the human races but more especially, it refers to Heathcliffââ¬â¢s race. When he arrives for the first time in the house, he is not easy on the eye; he is described as a black man, even if he isnââ¬â¢t, people behave with him as if he were a slave, as if he has no heart in the chest, in one word, he is nobody for the others. He is also named gypsy by Lintons and Hindley for many times in the novel: ââ¬ËHe is a dark-skinned gypsy in aspectââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëhow he could bring that gypsy brat into the houseââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËTake my colt, Gipsyââ¬â¢. He is judged in all situations by his appearance because it seems that, as the situation in these latter days, the idea of discrimination is present everywhere. Also, during his evolution in the novel, I think that he tries to demonstrate how he really is, but the people are focused more on what is said about black people. He tries to establish his own position in society, he starts from the bottom and he deals with many obstacles and difficulties to be on the top, but his effort is in vain; the only character, who is close to him even from the beginning, is Catherine, the love of his life. Even if he succeeds in becoming what he wanted, he is not completely happy, because of the others. He tries hard to be socially equal with the others, to be integrated into their society, to live in a free world, far away from inequality, discrimination or exploitation. I cannot judge Emily Bronteââ¬â¢s way of thinking regarding all those aspects, because it is the same thing today. People talk more and more about races equality, freedom, but no one is doing anything about it. This is an international problem, which will last for many years and it will continue to appear books about this subject because this subject is an inexhaustible source of information. Revenge is one of the main and predominant themes in Wuthering Heights. It seems that the revenge didnââ¬â¢t bring anything good, only worse because this was the cause of the many charactersââ¬â¢ death. I will start by saying about Heathcliff. Nelly, the narrator of the book, tells the story of Heathcliff and his revenge. He ruined Hindley by taking Wuthering Heights; also, he refused Haretonââ¬â¢s education. His marriage to Isabella was also a weapon of revenge because Catherine married Edgar Linton. Catherineââ¬â¢s ghost makes Heathcliff worse. He tried to separate Cathy and Linton because he thought they didnââ¬â¢t deserve to be happy. But Heathcliff figured out in the end that revenge is useless. He gives up, and only when he finds the true love and peace. He was finally happy in the other world. Also, Catherineââ¬â¢s revenge is not good. She blames Heathcliff and Edgar Linton for her early death, and also, I think that her double personality killed her because she didnââ¬â¢t know how to divide between them and this thing drives her mad. ââ¬ËYou and Edgar broke my heart, Heathcliff! [â⬠¦] You have killed me ââ¬â and thriven on itââ¬â¢. She had a miserable death. She remained captive on earth for 20 years because she couldnââ¬â¢t find peace and happiness in revenge. Hindley hated Heathcliff since they were children. He denied Heathcliffââ¬â¢s education and love for Catherine and this led to bankruptcy. After the all above-mentioned, the revenge didnââ¬â¢t help with anything to achieve the charactersââ¬â¢ goals. Another theme concerns the forces of nature and I found the storm and calm, which are transposed in two kinds of characters and houses; Wuthering Heights with the people who live there represent the storm and Thrushcross Grange and its inhabitants represent the calm. This difference can be seen very clearly and often in the charactersââ¬â¢ actions. But, at a certain time, this is changing: the calm becomes a weakness, it is not a charactersââ¬â¢ quality anymore and the storm produces spiritual nervousness. Also, I think that the title is very suggestive because it indicates the constant weather from there and the atmosphere from the inside, which is almost the same thing for me. Nevertheless, the characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, have a relation with the time too. I can say that their relationship looks like the weather from outside: it is tumultuous, bad and changeable. I think that the obsession of Heathcliff can also be an important theme. And this theme is in connection with the theme above-mentioned. Heathcliff feels for Catherine two different feelings: love and hate (which is expressed by his desire for revenge). Since they were children, Catherine was the center of Heathcliffââ¬â¢s life. And because they couldnââ¬â¢t be together, his obsession advanced more and more. Somehow, his obsession with revenge is completed by the obsession with love, and thatââ¬â¢s why he couldnââ¬â¢t get over until the end. Also, another example of Heathcliffââ¬â¢s obsession is the moment when Catherine marries Edgar Linton and leaves Wuthering Heights for Thrushcross Grange, Heathcliff cannot resist the temptation of seeing her and he watches her from outside. He is obsessed with her because they have a very strange relation and Heathcliff never felt this for anybody else. And the last but not least theme discussed by me in this subchapter is the charactersââ¬â¢ moral degradation. From my point of view, the characters have degraded because of several reasons; some of them because of the strong power of revenge, love and the desire to achieve their purpose irrespective of the means used. This theme can be easily seen in the scenes referring to hell and heaven; at the beginning with the description of Mr. Lockwoodââ¬â¢s Wuthering Heights as ââ¬Ëa perfect misanthropistââ¬â¢s Heavenââ¬â¢ and in the end with the ghostsââ¬â¢ apparition walking on the marshy hills. Also, Catherine and Heathcliff can be compared with supernatural forces: Heathcliff can be Satan, who is determined and unyielding regarding his desires; and Catherine can be compared with a fallen angel, who has a gradual transition from Light to Darkness. In conclusion, there are many themes in this book and I would like to talk about them and each of these themes has an important part in the book. When I read again the book, I found many interesting things which I couldnââ¬â¢t discover in my first reading. I can swear that there is more about them because this is a book full of surprises and also, I think that things like these can happen in real life too. I consider that this book contains elements, motives, and themes which make from this book, a masterpiece of Emily Bronte and also of the Victorian period. I chose to talk about the themes in Wuthering Heights because this subchapter will help me to introduce the next chapters regarding romanticism and realism in the book.

Canada s New Laws Regarding Doctor Assisted Suicide
According to the Criminal Code of Canada, physician-assisted suicide is illegal in Canada. However, due to the changing minds of Canadians and their values over a course of time, Canada created new laws that directed the act of assisted suicide by a physician. However, it is an ongoing debate whether these laws are problematic or beneficial. Canadaââ¬â¢s new laws regarding doctor-assisted suicide are effective because patients can die with dignity, there are benefits to the healthcare system and there will be less emotional turmoil for patients and their families. To begin, patients can die with dignity. Dying with dignity is the philosophical concept that a terminally ill individual should be allowed to die naturally and comfortably instead of experiencing a life of deep unconsciousness prolonged by mechanical support systems. (Death with Dignity) In 1993, Sue Rodriguez, a sufferer of ALS, believed that the time and manner of her death should not be determined by her illness or b y the law. She expressed that it should be legal for a physician to end her life for her at a time she has chosen. (Fenton) Rodriguez took her case to the Supreme Court of British Columbia, she argued that Section 241(b) of the Criminal Code, everyone who aids or abets a person in committing suicide commits an indictable offence, violates her rights in the Charter under Section 7, that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security, 12, that everyone has the right not to be subjected to anyShow MoreRelatedThe Ethical Dilemmas Of Euthanasia Essay1638 Words à |à 7 PagesThe Ethical Dilemmas of Euthanasia in Canada with the Legalization of Physician-Assisted Suicide This systematic analysis of the professional literature will explore the ethical dilemmas that Canadian medical professionals face while considering euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide, the latter of which was made legal in Canada on June 17, 2016 (Chochinov and Frazee, 2016).
